Body Fat Calculator

Deepi Brar
CONSUMER HEALTH INTERACTIVE

How do you know if you're overweight? Your weight alone doesn't give you enough information, because a healthy tall person should weigh more than a healthy short person. The next step is to figure out your body mass index (BMI) which factors in your height and weight. But even BMI can't tell you the most important thing -- how much of you is fat.

To really tell what kind of shape you're in, you need to know your body fat percentage. The best way to measure this is with a test at a gym or medical center that measures you directly. (There are different kinds -- you can get scanned with X-rays, hooked up to an electrical current, dunked in water, or just sit in an air-filled pod.) You can also estimate it with a few measurements and any of several dozens of formulas. All methods have some error, but if you use the same method each time you'll have some idea if your body is changing or not.

Try our calculator to get a rough idea of your body fat percentage:

Instructions
