Ask The Expert

Question: Are vaporizers safe for infants?

I have a 7-month-old daughter with a cough and congestion. I've heard that you're not supposed to use a vaporizer with infants -- is this true?

Dr. Michael Potter responds:

Actually, you can use vaporizers with infants. However, they are often not that helpful, and they can get contaminated with mold and mildew if not properly maintained and cleaned. I don't usually recommend them for my patients. If I think steam or mist might help a congested child, I usually suggest that the child be given a warm bath or be taken into the bathroom when someone else in the family is taking a shower. And, since I live in San Francisco, I sometimes suggest they bundle their child up and go for a walk in the fog. If you are wondering whether it makes sense for you to use a vaporizer with your child, you probably should discuss the symptoms your child is experiencing in more detail with your doctor. Best wishes for a good recovery!
